Please note that a limited number of free seats are available, and not all students who reach this mark threshold can be selected. Overview
The FIRMST Language School Russian Language University Preparatory Course equips students with the language skills, study habits and academic vocabulary necessary for university-level learning in Russia.
Using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), we develop students from CEFR A0 (Beginner) to CEFR B2 (Upper Intermediate), enabling them to confidently study in Russian-medium university programmes.
Subject-Specific Preparation
We introduce terminology and communication relevant to students' intended fields of study, including examples such as:
- Medical Russian
- Engineering Russian
- Information Technology Russian
- Business & Economics Russian
- Natural Sciences Russian
- Other field or specialty based Russian
Cultural Integration
We simultaneously prepare students for everyday life in Russia through practical knowledge of local culture, communication norms and local/student life, enabling a smoother transition into university or their field of work. We place a large emphasis on equipping students with:
- Everyday phrases
- Dos and don'ts
- Common situational conversations
- Transitioning from basic to intermediate and advanced vocabulary
Program Structure
The Preparatory Course is designed as a 10-month intensive programme, commencing in September/October 2026 and concluding in June/July 2027.
The curriculum is divided into four progressive language levels.

Weekly schedule
- 5 teaching days per week (Monday–Friday)
- 4.5 hours of classroom instruction per day
- Approximately 22.5 instructional hours per week
The programme is planned to be offered in:
- In-person (Moscow FLS facility)
- Partner university campus
- Online (live interactive classes)
This allows greater accessibility for international learners and students prior to arriving in Russia.
Teaching Methodology
The programme follows an immersive, communicative approach to language acquisition, combining structured instruction with practical application.

Special emphasis is placed on formal academic language and professional terminology required for higher education, ensuring students are prepared not only for daily communication but also for university lectures, coursework and examinations. Other learners receive emphasis on their field of interest. Instruction is delivered by experienced teachers specialising in Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL), supported by modern teaching resources and digital learning materials.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum progressively develops both general language proficiency and academic preparedness.
Level A1 — Foundation
Students begin with the fundamentals of the Russian language, including:
- Cyrillic alphabet
- Pronunciation and phonetics
- Basic grammar
- Everyday vocabulary
- Simple conversations
- Reading and writing fundamentals
Level A2 — Core Communication
Students expand their practical communication abilities through:
- Sentence construction
- Expanded vocabulary
- Intermediate grammar
- Everyday written communication
- Listening comprehension
- Conversational fluency
Level B1 — Academic Development
At this stage, emphasis shifts toward academic language by introducing:
- Complex grammatical structures
- Extended conversations
- Reading longer texts
- Formal writing
- Academic vocabulary
- Introduction to subject-specific terminology
Level B2 — University Preparation
The final stage prepares students for direct entry into Russian universities through:
- Advanced grammar
- Academic discussions
- Presentation skills
- University-style reading and writing
- SSLM: Subject-Specific Language Modules (Medical, Engineering, Business, or other subject topics in the Russian language)
- Preparation for Russian-medium higher education
Throughout the programme, learners and students also receive practical orientation covering Russian culture, student life, academic expectations and everyday living in Russia.
Assessment Framework
Student and learner progress is monitored continuously throughout the programme.
Assessment methods include:
- Classroom participation
- Homework and assignments
- Periodic quizzes
- Speaking assessments
- Reading and writing evaluations
- End-of-level examinations (requiring at least 70% to pass)
Each language block concludes with a comprehensive assessment to determine readiness for progression to the next CEFR level. Successful completion of all four levels is required for graduating the Preparatory Course.
